The Peddlers Grove "Tent City" is located in south central Minnesota
(see map for details).
The encampment site is adjacent to an 1854 prairie farm site, which is a stop on the "TIME
LANE" road of the Farmamerica journey
through agricultural history. The Minnesota Agricultural Interpretive Center preserves and promotes the strong
heritage of Minnesota agriculture through experiential hands-on
learning on its 120 acre site 4 miles West of Waseca, Minnesota. The staff encourages guests
to take an agricultural journey that goes from 1850 to the present. Whether churning butter, planting a garden or working
behind oxen, guests leave with a heightened awareness and appreciation for
agriculture.
The Peddlers Grove "Tent City" is an integral part
of the early American agricultural experience. As early settlers and farmers moved westward,
towns sprang up to service the farmers. Peddlers Grove was an actual town site located just
south of the Farmamerica location. It consisted of several log structures, a stagecoach stop,
livery stable and black smith shop. Several times each year, wandering "Peddlers" would set
up shop in the "Grove" adjacent to the stage-coach stop and would sell their wares. Little is
left of the site, save the village cemetery. We are
fashioning the "Pre-Town" tent city of Peddlers Grove after what we perceive to be these
Tinkers gatherings in the fall of 1854.
Costumed Living History re-enactors on a "Volunteer"
basis present demonstrations of early American skills. These include: Black Powder
muzzle-loading competitions, tomahawk & knife throwing, primitive archery target shoots,
brain tanning of leathers, open-fire cooking contests, flint & steel fire starting
demonstrations, spinning, dog sled teams, blacksmithing and many other ancient skills. Many of
these demonstrations we invite and welcome the public to participate in. Qualified "Volunteers"
are invited to fill out the Peddlers Grove application, which can be found on our
Volunteer page. Please download and fill out the form, and
submit it to the "Farmamerica Peddlers Grove Board of Governors".
